The Dragons |
A
band is being interviewed by a handheld camera. As the band
irreverently, yet earnestly, tries to explain the trials and
tribulations of the independent music scene; an all too familiar "verite"
moment occurs: The interviewer's hand accidentally hits the camera
causing a severe camera shake. |

The band well aware of the situation then proceeds to gyrate
and scream out, "earthquake."
It is at this point that a
documentary becomes a parody of itself, only to revert back and forth from
"true verite" to "spoof verite."
In a nod to true verite all the
interviewees were asked the same exact six questions. Designed to limit the
influence of the interviewer on the honesty of the responses this also
becomes the structure of the documentary.
This is to say that the documentary
itself is divided into segments by the six questions that explore the
documentary's main themes of diversity, artistic independence, and the
struggle between artistic vision and commercial appeal.

Yet, as the bands proceed to
tell the interviewers "go ahead, move the camera all over the place," and as
they keep playing head games with the audience, and each other, it soon
becomes apparent that this is not your typical wanna-be rockumentary. Mostly
because it is not driven by the music but by the funny, yet frank interviews
of the artists struggling beneath the surface of mainstream music
sensibilities. This is
the first documentary to take a serious look at the independent music
movement. |
